Behavorial Ways To Limit Your Spending

If you overspend on a regular basis you might consider trying some behavior-modification techniques. Like an over-eater who can’t stay out of the ice-cream at home, you might be well served with adjusting your behaviors to be more successful.

  • use the envelope system
  • cut up credit cards, or freeze them in a block of ice
  • put a program on your PC that blocks “bad” sites, and set it up to filter out online shopping sites
  • only shop with a friend
  • only shop from a list, and never exceed the budgeted amount
  • find an accountability partner and speak with them daily or weekly to review recent behavior
  • have another family member do the shopping (from the list you help prepare)
  • shop only when you are most in control. As a ex-binge-eater I was most in control in the morning, and very much out of control by the afternoon. Therefore grocery shopping in the evening was a caloric death sentence for me.
  • Avoid distractions when shopping. That might me shopping at a different time than most people (like before work) or shopping without the kids screaming for attention.
  • Always ask yourself how you feel before you make a purchase. Are you buying things due to your emotions or for some other reason?

Small behavior changes can yield fantastic results IF you turn them into habits!

  2. Just an additional note to ‘only shop with a friend’, make sure your friend is someone that isn’t passive or encouraging your spending. If they are passive, it’s like having no one there. And if they are encouraging you, it might have you spending more.
