Want To Save Money? Learn To Borrow

September 2, 2009 – 6:29 am

I guess the title of this post may be slightly misleading. I’m not telling you to borrow money. I’m recommending that you borrow stuff you want.

Movies make for a great example. It amazes me how many of my friends are trying to dig themselves out of debt and yet still purchase 30+ DVD’s a year. I’m sure some get their DVD collection mostly as holiday gifts, but if not do you really need to BUY a DVD just because you like a movie? If movies are your thing (or CD’s), then so be it. But you could easily save most if not all of that cost by:

  • borrowing from the library
  • borrowing from a friend (this would be easy for me apparently)
  • waiting until the movie comes on television and then tape it on a DVR. After all, how many of us own movies that show up on television every single day? I guess buying “The American President” and “The Matrix” wasn’t the world’s greatest decision….
  • get a Netflix membership. My 3-dvd membership costs ~18/month. Therefore if a dvd also costs $18 each I’d be ahead if I used to buy 12 dvd’s a year.

Clearly this won’t work well if you have kiddos that want to watch the Little Mermaid over and over for five years straight. However you could wait for a deal at a garage sale, EBay, freecycle, or craigslist in order to save money bit it requires PATIENCE. And as momma always said: “practice makes perfect.”

The same holds true for books (buy used, use a library, borrow from a friend, wait for a paper back, wait for a copy @ halfprice books), CD’s, and a variety of other items most of us think we “need”.

Is there anything you borrow that most other people purchase?
