Frugal = Clutter?
August 13, 2009 – 10:10 amI’m facing a dilemma at the moment. On the one hand I’m trying to be frugal by collecting kids items we’ll need in the next couple of years. Friends have offered us items, and we’ve purchased a few items as well at a deep discount in most cases.
The issue I have is that these added items are adding a bit of clutter to our home, and is definitely adding to our attic as well. I don’t mind throwing a few bins of stuff in the attic, but both my wife and I start to get uncomfortable when we start accumulating a bunch of stuff.
The other worry that I have is what will happen if we expect to have another kid or two? Do we keep a bunch of this stuff around for a what-if? It’s a big dollar amount, so it very well may be worth it. However if it’s not in the attic it’s really going to start to bug me.
Thoughts? Am I frugal by keeping and storing kids stuff that they can’t use for a while, and is it worth the added clutter?

I personally don’t have kids but I have a huge problem letting of things and so I keep all the clothes that used to fit me, the clothes that fit me now and the clothes that might fit me in the future. Because it is a lot of money and no reason to spend it twice, if you have room to store it, you should definitely do that.

I can SO relate! Our house is so cluttered with ’stuff’ but it’s really hard to throw things away or even give them away. Both hubby and I hate doing it…it’s the “what if we need it” disease.
On the other hand, I don’t want to go through and just throw things out randomly … because we truly might need them someday. *sigh* It’s a constant battle.

Now that you’re having kids, you will always have clutter. Even if you don’t bring it into the house, people will give it to you! Welcome it, embrace it, and organize it! You will have times in your life where money may be tight or you may be very busy, and you will appreciate all those things you’ve stockpiled away!

Or you can split the difference by separating the clutter into stuff you know you want to keep and stuff you could circulate through a thrift store, then replenish from there when you need it. Or if friends or co-workers are going to be having babies about the same time, join their hand-me-down circles both as a receiver and contributor of outgrown stuff.
