Teachable Moments In The Grocery Store

August 5, 2009 – 5:20 am

I was in the grocery store the other day and I overheard a father teaching his daughter a few things as they shopped. It got me thinking how many teachable moments there are for kids in a grocery store. These include:

  • counting money
  • paying for items and counting change
  • knowing how much things cost
  • looking for value by comparing costs, judging the quality of goods
  • adding to know if you have enough money
  • holding securely onto money
  • weighing items
  • noting the different costs of very similar items, like bottled water, grades of eggs, etc.
  • methods of payment and the differences
  • being thankful for the ability to purchase food
  • asking clerks for help
  • creating a shopping list/budgeting
  • reading weekly ads

I hope to take advantage of such moments starting at a young age with my own kiddos.

  2. A great way to teach about both money and math.

I wrote about an experience a couple months back at http://joetaxpayer.com/frugal-friday-pt-6/
where I showed my 10 yr old how they charge over 5 times the price per pound to sell you the small snack packs vs buying a large size and just taking a portion at a time.
