Bucketized Living
May 17, 2009 – 11:37 am
I tend to lead what I call a bucketized life – meaning a life made up of a few of different buckets. I try to lead a balanced life, but inevitably I tend to view the different parts of my life as separate buckets. You can even hear it in the way I speak:
- “I’m going to ‘work on our finances’ for a while”
- “Let’s go to that marriage conference and ‘invest in our marriage’”
- “I’m going to work on my health this year”
- “Let’s work on career planning at our next meeting”
My typical buckets include family finances (surprise surprise), health, marriage, personal development, spiritual development, and house (maintenance, etc).
I’m all about focusing on one task at a time, but I’m starting to see that most really good ideas span buckets. For example, if you work to improve your health it will also help out your financial situation (less food, less future medical bills) and your marriage (more stable mood, etc). Likewise working on your marriage will help your health and wealth. Research shows that married people live longer and have a larger net worth than single individuals.
Consider setting a goal and thinking through all of the benefits, across buckets, before starting. My guess is that once you sell all of the benefits of making a change in your life the more motivated you will be to reach your goal(s).
