Save Money AND Lose Weight
May 4, 2009 – 4:59 amI find that it’s much easier to save money from my grocery budget when I’m eating well. My wife and I have been able to decrease our weekly grocery bill from about $120/week to $80 a week by a combination of eating better and closely planning and monitoring our grocery spending.
As I’ve written before I use the following tools to save money at the grocery store:
- a price book (i.e. a list of the best price for an item at a particular store)
- I freeze leftovers and staples, like meat and bread, so I can buy in bulk
- I plan our lunches and dinners weekly, to reduce throwing away left-overs. I’ve slacked a little on this one lately, and I notice I’ve been throwing away more food than I would like lately.
- I shop at multiple stores. I know this is weird, but I actually like grocery shopping, and the store are all close to my home or work so the financial value is significant.
I would estimate that about $20/wk of our $40/wk savings has come from using the four tools above. The other $20/wk is a by product of eating in a more healthy way. Convenience has cost, and when coupled with the fact that I overeat convenience and expensive foods the budget can really take a hit. Eating healthy also interestingly enough allows me to sleep less (giving me time to blog and/or workout) and be more mentally sharp at work.
