No-Grocery-Shopping Week

April 22, 2009 – 6:40 am

We have a lot of weird unrecognized holidays. Some support good causes or are designated by various groups to raise awareness. Some amuse us. Some are like fight club, and should never be spoken of again. Day’s like:

I’d like to propose a week-long celebration myself: on the first week of November (or whenever) I would like to propose the HarvestingDollars No Grocery Shopping Week! Did you like how I tried to sneak in a little blog marketing? So sneaky it was almost subliminal! :-)

O.k. So let’s just call it the “No Grocery Shopping Week”. Here’s how it works, and this is tricky so pay attention.

1. During the week you may not go to the grocery store. Period. Out of milk? Looks like it’s oatmeal (with water) or beerioos‘ for you.

2. You can’t eat out at restaurants. It would be too easy to avoid eating at home all week.

3. A week is 7 days. Not 5 days, not one meal. 7 full days.

Take advantage of this week to clean out your fridge and pantry, and eat up all of that food you thought looked so good six months ago. And don’t forget about the 50 lbs of frozen meat you have in your extra freezer in the garage. Yea. I’m talkin’ to you.  :-)

  2. What an awesome idea! It’s also a great way to clear out things that have been in the pantry too long.

  3. This sounds like a great idea and there is nothing wrong with a little shameless promotions. =) Count me in when the date is finalized.

  4. While I applaud the idea, I have four boys. I cannot keep enough milk in the house. I go to the grocery store four times a week.

During Hurricane Ike, we had no grocery stores for 10 days. We made do with what was in our pantry and what little we could rescue from our frig. I “got” to clean out my refrigerators and freezers, learned how to bake on a gas grill, and how to make canned tuna forty different ways.

It’ll be awhile before I give up my grocery store runs again. Amazing how you only appreciate the little things when they’re gone.
