While it’s true you can keep track of a budget with paper or a spreadsheet (I did that for years), I’ve found it to be a HUGE time saver to use some sort of computer program to help out. There are a lot of them out there, and not every one of them meets every person’s needs.

I created one called NeoBudget (http://www.neobudget.com) that uses the envelope method to track your budget. I created it because I wanted a cheap alternative that was online and available wherever I travel. It has several tools and wizards that walk you through the process of setting up your budget, and goes through many of the steps mentioned in this post.
