Unemployement Is On The Rise

November 5, 2008 – 5:03 am

I don’t have a crystal ball, but according to recent reports layoffs and unemployment is on the rise. CNN reports that the number of mass layoffs has increased dramatically from august to September.
According to outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray, and Christmas the average job search took 4.4 months in the third quarter of this year. The other interesting tidbit was that only 13% of job seekers were willing to relocate.

I find this news depressing, but from my limited perspective it does clearly appear that things are gonna get bumpy in the near term. People are going to need to broaden their search criteria when looking for a job, and those that are lucky enough to keep their jobs will likely see limited raises and bonuses. During my firm’s recent layoff I thought that some people might even be offered demotions to take different jobs within the company. I don’t know if this occurred or not, but I would have considered this option personally if given the choice.

Now would be a good time to learn a new skill, improve your value to your firm, and keep an eye out for signs that your job or industry may be headed for a wreck.
