Needless Spending Pains Me
September 7, 2008 – 6:12 amI’m not against spending money. I’m against needlessly spending money. I feel like a bad steward of what God has given me when a pay too much for an item, or purchase something that isn’t used. We all make mistakes, but I’m personally trying to make better buying decisions in order to be a better steward.
This is one of the many reasons I enjoyed the book “Your Money Or Your Life“. One of the steps in the YMOYL program is to review your budget and think about if you’re getting enough pleasure or benefit from your purchases. If not, you should make different decisions in the future to improve your cost/benefit equation.
“Money needlessly spent is a double loss. Not only is it gone, but its potential for earnings is also gone.” – Randy Acorn
The advice I’ve been trying to follow is simple:
- there’s nothing wrong with spending money and enjoying the gifts God has given
- consider each purchase, large or small, and think about if there’s a way to increase the benefit by making a different decision
- I don’t make a purchase if I don’t have peace about the decision
- I don’t make a large purchase without discussing it with my wife first. Women typically have a wonderful power of discernment in such situations (and when judging the character of others). I also wouldn’t what a “thing” to get in the way of a happy marriage.
- I take my time with large and/or impulse purchases (which I suppose means I don’t make impulse purchases).

It is true that we need to spend money wisely. Sometimes we can buy the same product with cheapest price, so we have the choice to buy it with the same quality.
This is the nice post, have a nice day.
