The Opposite Of Me

August 29, 2008 – 5:53 am

I love watching what people do in stores and seeing what they buy. I was behind a guy in Sam’s Club the other day that very well could be the “anti-me”. Now please note that I am not judging this man, because I have no right to judge anyone. I’d simply like to point out that this person appears to do the exact opposite of what I would do in a situation. Here’s what I observed:

  • a man in a well-worn suit, a suit that was a couple steps below “Men’s Warehouse” was buying what looked like a 50+ inch TV.
  • The cashier ran up the total which came to ~$2000. If my bill came to $2000 I would have had a heart attack.
  • The man pulled out a credit card to pay, and he must have had 25 separate cards. I don’t know if they were all credit cards, but he kept the stack in his pocket with all of them tied together with a rubber band.
  • The cashier asked the man if he wanted to buy an extended warranty, and after a few minutes (I was getting impatient) he agreed.
  • Although I didn’t see it myself, I can only assume that this guy had a massive SUV in order to haul his TV back home.

Now perhaps he’s wealthly or has other reasons for his choices. I’m not against buying or having stuff per se. I like stuff, and I have stuff myself. I just find it odd to see someone make big money decisions that appear to be questionable all at once.

While I can only shake my head at the thought of someone having a stack of credit cards…and I too would have the same reaction you did, but what is that comment about his clothing meant to be???? I am not sure if you are down on “well worn clothing” or saying you would not have something so old and of lesser quality! Just curious!

  3. I didn’t mean anything either positive or negative when I described what the guy was wearing. I was simply trying to accurately describe his appearance. I don’t have to wear a suit to work, but most of my clothing could be considered “well worn”. Great question!

  4. Good post, Honestly a big screen TV will bring entertainment but a $2000 suit will bring you more money if used correctly.

  5. It may be questionable to you that he bought that big TV but it wasn’t to him. Perhaps he has saved a long time for it and believes he deserves it.

I don’t understand this statement…he could have a truck or something else and why does it have to be “massive”.

  6. Good point Sabriena on the truck. He may have had a truck, but it’s unlikely that a tv that size would have fit in anything less than a full size truck (or full size SUV). Even if he had a truck (or a H1 Hummer or other SUV for that matter), I wasn’t trying to judge the man. I’m just saying that he is making decisions that I wouldn’t have made. If he has a truck, and has a job that requires a suit, it’s unlike (on average) that he would need a truck instead of a more economical vehicle. Thanks for the comment.
