Budgeting Games (Finance Games #6)

August 9, 2008 – 6:01 am

In addition to the other financial games I’ve written about you might consider making up a few budget-related challenges or games.

Budget Games To Consider

  • go on a spending fast for X days, where you don’t spend any money
  • reduce spending in one budget category by 10% for a month
  • find a way to save 5% to 10% on your fixed expenses (insurance premiums, refinance your home, etc)
  • compare your checking account interest rate to the top rates at bankrate.com, and consider switching to another bank
  • find the recent savings rates and compare those rates to the bank you use for your emergency fund
  • sit down with your spouse and select the one budget category that you enjoy the least, and then reallocate those funds to another category
  • find a way to save 5% on your utilities this month. Stop running small loads of laundry, get a programmable thermostat, adjust your programmable thermostat 2 degrees up in the summer or down in the winter, or replace your light bulbs with CFL bulbs.

  3. Budgeting and cutting expenses to save money is serious business. However, making a game out of budgeting would be a novel way for people to enjoy getting by on less.
