Locus of Control
June 17, 2008 – 6:30 am
Do you blame other people or things for your current situation? If so then you most likely have external locus of control. If, however, you believe that everything that happens to you is a result of your own actions, you have an internal locus of control.
Your ‘locus of control’ is simply a way to describe how you view life. If you believe in fate or that ‘nothing good will ever happen to me’, then you believe that there is nothing you can do to change your destiny. Internal and external locus’ of control are two different ends of the spectrum. Sure we all feel down when bad things happen, but the more able you are to take responsibility for your current life situation, the more successful you will be.
According to Wikipedia people with an internal locus of control are:
- more likely to work towards a goal, especially long-term goals
- able to delay gratification
- more able to tolerate ambiguous situations
- more likely to prefer games of skill versus games of luck (no surprise here)
- more willing to work on self-improvement and take risks
My life changed once I realized that I was truly in control of my actions and their resulting outcomes. Of course unexpected things can happen in life, but now realize that I am responsible for achieving my goals. I am also responsible for how I react to life events, and I can choose to view things in a productive or non-productive angle.
This is a key point, so please don’t miss it! YOU are responsible for the results you’ve had in life thus far. And YOU can make the changes necessary to change any and every part of your life if you choose to do so. Everyone will have different trials and tribulations along the way, and some things may be more difficult for you than they were for others. We are all unique in both good and bad ways, but once you take control of your life you will increase your self-confidence, make changes, and yield the benefits of those actions. Take the first step toward a better life today!
