Save Money On Groceries At Kroger
May 7, 2008 – 6:58 amKroger is running a promotion through the month of July that you should be aware of. If you purchase a Kroger grocery store gift card for $300, $600, or $1200 they will give you 10% more for free. In other words, if you pay $600 and you get a $660 gift card. This promotion is related to the tax rebates that are just now hitting our mailboxes (and bank accounts). The cool part is you don’t need to show proof that you received a rebate to participate.
Here are a few thoughts:
- If you can afford to pay for your groceries in advance for a while, this is a great way to save some serious cash.
- The promotion runs through July 31, so I’m personally going to buy a card now to cover my budgeted grocery expenses through the end of July, and then I’ll buy another card at the very end of July as well.
- I’m not a big fan of dipping into an emergency fund, but if you have a full (3-6month) emergency fund you might consider this. If you had an opportunity fund or a flexible fund, that would be ideal. Should an emergency hit though you would potentially use your emergency fund for food and basic necessities, so it’s somewhat reasonable to think some of your emergency fund could be used to take advantage of this offer. Just don’t overdo it, and make sure you replenish the funds as quickly as possible.
And here’s the finance ninja move: if you purchase it with a cash-back credit card that offers 1 to 5% cashback on grocery purchases you’ll save even more!
I wish Safeway/Tom Thumb had the same offer!
